What to Expect:
The Utuse Waterfalls:
The waterfalls are around 17km away from Takayama Station and approximately 30 minutes by car. They have been designated by the Japanese Government as one of the top 100 most beautiful areas for natural scenery in Japan. It is especially beautiful in autumn when the leaves change color. The area of the natural reserve is a staggering 800 hectares, and the highest point lies 1,300m above sea level. There is a picturesque viewpoint of the Japan Alps at 880m. Be sure to take a photo! There are 13 different waterfalls within almost 1 hour’s walking distance. Some of them are over 15m in height. Near the waterfalls there are also some beautiful trekking courses.
“Hana no Mori” Flower Park:
This flower park is located next to the Utsue Waterfall with 35,000m² of designated natural parklands. The park features a variety of Japanese flowers, some of which are rare or non-existent outside of Japan. There is such a large variety that there are always some flowers blooming no matter the time of the year. However, it is only open from late-May to early-August. Highlights of the flower park include the 10,000 plants of “Bamboo Lily” in June-July, 150,000 plants of “Japanese Primrose” in May-June, 5,000 plants of “Hydrangea” in July-August. You can also see flowers such as “Asian Skunk Cabbage”, “Golden Lace”, “Sweet Flag” and “Japanese Stewartia” in the park. The tree species you can find in the park will include “Magnolia”, “Japanese white birch”, “Horse Chestnut”, “Japanese Cedar”, “Japanese Oak” and many other native floral species.
“Yuyukan” Hot Spring (Onsen).
This is a simple, but soothing alkaline hot spring facility near the Utsue waterfalls.
6 types of indoor bath facilities and 3 types of open-air bath facilities available. There are waterfall showers (pelting water), a stone sauna (good for anti-aging and smooth skin through intense perspiration), a salt sauna (which detoxes the skin through salt), a bubble & Jacuzzi bath, an infrared sauna, and a handful of others. A definite must for those looking to treat themselves. The definitive experience of Japanese “onsen” is assured here.
