Shirakawago Village Tour:
Our private guided tours to the Shirakawago villages are some of our most popular. We start and end our tours near your hotel in Takayama.
The tour includes land transport by hired van, highway tolls, parking fees, quick stops at viewpoints, and a walking guide through the village in English. We are quite flexible if you need to make adjustments regarding times and itineraries.
Shirakawago is in Gifu Prefecture’s northwest, around 50 minutes away from Takayama and at the foot of the sacred Mt. Hakusan. The region has some of the heaviest snowfalls in all of Japan, yet ever since its registration as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995 it has become one of the most popular destinations for tourists visiting central Japan.
More than 2 million people from all over the world annually visit this small village with a local population of less than 2,000 people.
These villages are well known for their houses constructed in the architectural style known as “gassho-style”, meaning “prayer-hands” style. They are characterized by a thatched and steep roof resembling two hands joined in prayer.
The design is exceptionally strong and, in combination with the unique properties of their thatching, allow the houses to withstand and shed the weight of the region’s heavy snowfalls in winter.
More than 100 thatched-roof “gassho-style” houses still remain and stand together in the village. Local people are still living in these houses, and most of residents have tourism businesses such as guest houses, restaurants, cafes, and souvenir shops.
On this tour, you can explore this small and lovely village by walking, and enjoy the unique and beautiful rural landscape with traditional Japanese sentiments.
We stop at the major viewpoint to see the whole village from on top of the hill. (Usually you need to either walk 20-25 mins or take a shuttle bus with extra charge, but this tour includes the trip to the wonderful viewpoint).
After the walking tour in the village, if the guests want to try natural onsen (hot spring), we can take you to the nearby onsen (optional). Before dropping you at your hotel, we can also take you to some shopping areas (optional: shops such as your local shopping mall, used-items shop, drug store, super-markets, etc.).
