What to Expect:

The Hida Great Limestone Cave is a popular destination for tourists visiting Takayama. It is located 30 minutes away from Takayama by car.
It is a fantastic place that with an 800m underground walking course. In all of Japan, this is the only place where one can see delicate finger-like helictite cave formations. Nearby, one can also see the Ohashi Museum’s regular display of about 1000 world-renowned works of art, handicrafts, and ornaments.

If you had never explored inside a cave before, this will be a quite adventurous and exciting experience!
You can see beautifully and mysteriously lit up colorful limestone.
The walking paths are well paved, so anyone can try to go down and enjoy this wonderful attraction.

The walking tour inside the caves take around 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on your walking speed, as well as how many courses you would cover.
If you are tired or a bit scared, you can get out from the cave after passing through 1st walking path, as shortest course.

On the way back to Takayama, we would stop at “Senkoji” Temple, which is one of the oldest temples in Takayama with 1,200 years history, and houses more than 60 wooden curved Buddha statues made by famous dedicated monk “Enku”.

In Takayama town, we will also stop at “Zenkoji” temple for the interesting “Kaidan” Tour.
This is another form of mysterious experiences you never forget in the Buddhist temple’s underground.
You need to walk through the complete darkness in the pass underground, and try to touch the special key to “Paradise”, which is positioned right below the Buddha statue in the Main Hall. It could by a bit scary, but wonderful experience for sure!
